Hint 2. (Ans C)

Data for Q.3-4 are given below. Solve the problems and choose correct answers.

The circular disc shown in its plane view in the figure rotates in a plane parallel to the horizontal plane about the point O at a uniform angular velocity . Two other points A and B are located on the line OZ at distances  from O respectively.

Question 3. The velocity of point B with respect to point A is a vector of magnitude

(A) 0

(B)  and direction opposite to the direction of motion of B.

(C)  and direction same as the direction of motion of B.

(D)  and direction being from O to Z.

GATE-ME-2003

Hint 3. (Ans C)

B has the linear velocity

A has the linear velocity

Obviously,

Because

So relative velocity in the direction of motion of point B and it will experience a centripetal acceleration of  towards “O”.

Question 4. The acceleration of point B with respect to point A is vector of magnitude.

(A) 0

(B)  and direction opposite to the direction of motion of B.

(C)  and direction opposite to the direction of motion of B.

(D)  and direction from Z to O.

GATE-ME-2003

Hint 4. (Ans D)

Acceleration of point B with respect to point A

And direction from z to O.

Question 5. When a cylinder is located in a Vee-block, then number of degrees of freedom which are arrested is

(A) 2

(B) 4

(C) 7

(D) 8

GATE-ME-2003

Hint 5. (Ans C)

Question 6. The length of the inks of a 4- bar linkage with revolute pairs only are p, q, r and s units. Given that . Which of these links should be the fixed one, for obtaining a “double crank” mechanism?

(A) Link of the length p

(B) Link of the length q

(C) Link of the length r

(D) Link of the length s

GATE-ME-2003

Hint 6. (Ans A)

To obtain a “Double Crank Mechanism”, shortest link is always fixed. While obtaining a “Double Lever Mechanism”, the link opposite to the “Shortest Link” is fixed.

Question 7. The mechanism used in a shaping machine is

(A) A closed 4-bar chain having 4 revolute pairs

(B) A closed 6-bar chain having 6 revolute pairs

(C) A closed 4- bar chain having 2 revolute and 2 sliding pairs

(D) An inversion of the single slider chain

GATE-ME-2003

Hint 7. (Ans D)
