What to do in summer training?
For all of the engineering students, summer training is a part of curriculum in most of the colleges. The Training and Placement Office is responsible to arrange the summer training for the students in the reputed organization. Many of the students need not necessarily agree to their summer training schedule.
Since this is vacation, so some of the students definitely try to spend their quality time with family. Some of them are not happy with the organization they have allotted by the TPO. So, most of the students does not go to summer training and at the end of vacation, they produce fake reports and certificates.
Why summer training is necessary?
The aim of the training is to get exposure to the industry before you could go there for a job. This will give you the idea how industry works. How they worked according to their deadlines, what is the pressure on them etc.
Since in India, (I don’t know about the rest of the world) there is no provision to incentivize the industry to provide summer training to the students, the industry does not provide much help to the students especially private college students. I have seen that many of the industry ask to submit the students’ training letter and issues them certificate without provide them proper training.
The solution:
Since it the part of your curriculum and most universities give either marks or grade for the necessary summer training, you have to do proper summer training, if arranged properly. If the training is not arranged, or you do not want to go on training, don’t waste the time. Go to some institute who will give you some professional training. This training adds value in your resume and definitely you would be superior to those who do not undergo summer training.
Where to do summer training:
NSIC: Although a sarkaari (govt) organization, NSIC has some great courses in their arsenal. They provide good training for students (especially mechanical engineering students). They provides training on CNC, EDM and most of the mechanical processes. Recently, they started some software and electronics courses for the other branches of engineering.

Software certification:
Some of the students undergo software training in the summers. In India, software training institute mushroomed everywhere just like paan ki dukaan. The problem is that most of the institutes open their shops without the necessary software licenses. They runs solely on pirated softwares. Don’t fell prey in the hands of them, ask them for necessary licences.
Go for professional certificates, this adds value in your career. For example if you are a computer engineer go for MCSE, CCNA, ORACLE certification, Red Hat Certified Professional and so on. I you are a mechanical engineering graduate, go for the autoDesk certified professional certificate. They mostly have online tests to certify the students. The certificate issued by your local institute does not add any value. These certificates are as good as you make it on your own. But the certificate issued by Microsoft, RedHAT, ORACLE, Autodesk and any other software manufacturer adds value in your career.
Conclusion:
Don’t waste your time, add some value. Wish you best of luck for the summer vacations and training.
